  • Kitchen Finish 101: Acrylic Finish

We are introducing a Kitchen Finish 101 series to take you through one of the fundamentals of the kitchen: everything to know about the best finishes for the Indian kitchen. The kitchen finish determines the overall look of the kitchen, yet it should also withstand the constant activity that takes place. This blog will discuss the basics of the acrylic finish, and how well it can work within a modular kitchen.

What is Acrylic? Acrylic is a non-toxic, high gloss finish which gives kitchen cabinets a smooth appearance. In the manufacturing process, a thin layer of the material is placed on MDF or Plywood to create the shutters. The entire shutter is later covered with a protective layer and the edges are sealed. The overall material is extremely reflective, giving the kitchen a mirror-like appearance. This mirrored appearance is an excellent choice for smaller kitchens, as it will make the kitchen appear much larger and more spacious than it actually is. The acrylic finish is available in a variety of colors.

Pros of Acrylic: The acrylic finish is a great option to achieve the modern look within a home. Becoming the more-preferred choice for Indian kitchens, the acrylic finish has some great advantages:

    • --Can withstand wear and tear: The kitchen can last for many years without any need for repair.
    • --Moisture, UV, and scratch resistant
    • --Easy to maintain: Maintaining Acrylic shutters is an easy process, and can be wiped down regularly with soap and water.
    • --Gives the kitchen an ultra-glossy finish
    • --Extensive range of colors
    • --Creates an inviting appearance within the kitchen.

Cons of Acrylic: The acrylic finish also has its own set of disadvantages:

    • --Edges of the shutter are visible: The acrylic material is placed on top of the shutter, but it does not continue to wrap around the   edges.
    • --The high-gloss finish brings out the finger prints, dirt, and stains easily, and therefore they require regular cleaning
    • --More expensive than the laminate finish
    • --Not available in a matt finish: Acrylic is limited to the high-gloss options. If you prefer a more matt finish in the kitchen, then this finish option is not for you.
