However, pattern rugs work very well to add some visual interest of the remaining bedroom elements are a bit more subdued. In terms of rug placement, it should be as long as the bed, and placed approximately two feet away from the bed itself. In the bedroom, rugs are also great space dividers, For example if there is a small sitting area within the room, having a an area rug designate two different spaces within the entire room.

  • 4 Spots to add Artwork in the Kitchen

A kitchen is more than just a functional space. It is the most used room in the home, and should even be personalized in that way. Adding decorative items or artwork to a kitchen space is a great way to make it your own, and it adds that little extra something, enhancing the entire room. Placement of any artwork in the kitchen is key to ensure it does not interfere with functionality, yet still adds to the overall design . Even the types and location of the artwork make a big difference. For example, any artwork on the walls, should be hung at eye level, unless the eye-line should be drawn upward. Other items such as colorful pieces should be kept away from direct sun to prevent color fading as well. Nevertheless, the best locations for artwork in the kitchen are given below.

Above Upper Cabinets: With upper cabinets in the kitchen, there is always some dead space above which looks extremely bare unless something is placed on it. Therefore, add interesting pieces to the upper cabinets to draw the eye-line upward, and create that visual interest. It is a great area to place interesting sculptures or framed art pieces, as they are well out of way, yet still add some character to the kitchen space.

Near the Entrance: The kitchen entrance is a great place to add some energy as soon as you walk into the kitchen. The entrance or doorway to the kitchen typically has empty wall space next to it. Therefore, it is a great space to hang some wall art and add a bit of color to that blank space in the kitchen.

Open Shelving: As mentioned in many previous blogs, open shelves are great for displaying collections and storing items. They also great for placing artwork in the kitchen, yet still being out of the way of kitchen activities. Open shelves can be used to display beautiful dishes or framed paintings. The way the shelves are still being used, yet there is visual interest at the same time.

Above the Sink: Hanging artwork above the sink is quite unique. If there is room, the wall space above the sink will create immediate visual interest, and will give an element of surprise. In hanging items above the sink, ensure they are framed and hung a little bit higher to stay out of the moisture zone.

  • 4 Things to Know about Custom-Made Cabinetry

Anything custom-made is a blessing. In a custom design, everything is made exclusively to you, catering to your taste and your home. In the long run, a custom solution gives a seamless design, ultimately adding value to your home space. They are made-to-measure and become a real asset within the home. At ModSpace.in, we offer custom-made cabinetry in all forms for the home: kitchens, wardrobes, entertainment units, and vanities. However, before diving into the furniture, below are 4 tips to know about getting custom furniture within the home.

Ask the Right Questions: In finalizing a vendor for your custom cabinetry, ensure they are genuine and provide custom solutions. Oftentimes, vendors either have stand sizes in which they create custom solutions or they are restricted with the type of measurements they can provide. For a full custom solution, ensure the vendor you choose is able to cater all types of measurements and spaces to provide the perfect solution for your home.

Think about the Usage of the Cabinetry: In designing the cabinetry, consider the function. In the kitchen, it would be used to stocking crockery, cutlery, and food items. With an entertainment unit, space is needed to access the cords and accessories. Therefore, in designing the cabinetry, consider what all it will be used for based on the room or space it is in. Defining the usage while creating a custom solution eases the design process and allows the vendor further design a solution especially for you.

Make Sure Shelves can Handle the Weight: Another step to consider is how items will the stored and whether or not heavier or lighter items will be placed and their arrangement. With cabinet shelves, ensure they are sturdy enough to handle the weight. With heavier items additional support may be required.

Choose the Right Finishes: Ensure the finishes are durable and long lasting. Areas in the kitchen, such as near the sink, may require a water resistant finish, while a wardrobe finish has a bit more flexibility. Nevertheless, while choosing the finish, budget also comes into play. Finishes such as laminate are much more economical, while a finish such as PU Paint or Solid wood is more expensive. For all types of furniture in the home, the are a variety of finishes at different price points.

With finalizing the perfect solution for your home, do your homework before meeting your vendor. Have an idea of what you are looking for before picking out the cabinetry solutions. In doing so, you and your vendor can sit and brainstorm for that perfect custom solution for your home!

  • 6 Measurements to Know When Planning Your Kitchen

Designing  a kitchen requires precision. In creating a functional space, every millimeter counts, and there are some basic measurements that a homeowner needs to ensure they take or get done at the beginning of the design process. For taking measurements yourself check out this previous blog post. In the meantime, here is a helpful guide on some of the measurements required for your brand new kitchen space.

Work Aisles and Walkways: Work aisles are where an individual stands to work at the kitchen counter, while walkways are the pathways for users and residents to move around the kitchen. Although the ideal measurements can vary depending on the space and layout of L-Shape, U-Shape or parallel, the ideal work aisle or countertop width should be at least 42 inches wide, while walkways should ideally be 36 inches wide.

Countertop Height: Next is the countertop height. In other words, the ideal placement of the the kitchen counter or worktop within the kitchen. The countertop height should be proportionate to your height and size so it is comfortable for you or the main user in your home to use for a more efficient design space. A general rule to follow for a comfortable height at the kitchen counter is the measure down for the tip of the elbow. Nevertheless, an ideal place to start is at the standard height for a kitchen countertop which should be between 34 and 36 inches.

Landing Areas: The landing areas cover the counter tops in both width and depth. A prep area next to the cooktop should be at least 12 inches wide, while the area next to the sink should be at least 18 inches wide. Along with the width, the average depth of a countertop is 24 inches. It is just enough space to have a productive work area within the kitchen. It ideal to place all types of items, including small utensils without the strain of reaching too far to grab anything.

Space Between Countertop and Upper Cabinet: The perfect distance between the countertops and upper cabinets should be just at the perfect space where the cabinet does not get in the way, the items are easily reachable, and the counter top is easily visible for getting work done. A reference point for the ideal distance is about 15-20 inches. However, the final measurements depend on the space and the specifications of the kitchen. Ensure it is not too low that the countertop is not visible, yet that it is not too high that it is difficult to reach.

Cabinet Depth: Cabinet depth for upper and lower cabinets can vary. The average lower cabinet depth usually matches the countertop at 24 inches. However, the upper cabinets are typically built a little smaller than the lower cabinets, making a depth of 12-15 inches the most ideal. These cabinets are built smaller to avoid the user from banging their head while using the upper cabinets and the countertops at the same time.

Work Triangle: Finally, one of the most important measurements is the kitchen work triangle. Whether the kitchen is a parallel, U-shape, or a L-shape layout, the distance between the three elements should balanced out to maximize the efficiency of the work space. For more about the kitchen work triangle, click on the previous blog post. The distance between any two appliances should be between 36 and 84 inches. Anything less or more will cause interference within the work space.

Overall, the measurements given above are an average or a starting point. The ideal measurements for the kitchen are dependent on space available and proportion and size of the average use within the home. With the list above, use it as a checklist to avoid covering any missing points in your kitchen.

Whether it folds up or it folds down from the wall, a table can easily be added in an unobtrusive way and taken out when it is required. • 4 Practical Home Design Practices to Follow

Home design is one of the more challenging tasks in creating a new space or renovating an existing home. Oftentimes, one does not know where to start, who to talk to, or where it should even end, and it gets overwhelming. However, before designing the home, there are a few basic practices one should follow to maintain some organization and order and not get confused within the design process. Those 4 principles are below.

    1. Organize the Wiring: Wiring is inevitable within a home. Particularly behind the entertainment unit, the wiring can be a chaotic mess of television, DVD Player, Speakers, satellite box, and even gaming consuls. Within extensive wiring in such a small space, it is best to ensure that there is some way of organizing without interfering with the overall design. Whether it is setting panels or grouping certain wires together, keeping the wiring in order eliminates a wiring mess from view and allows for much easier usage of the entire entertainment center.

    2. Wardrobe Shutters: As mentioned in a previous blog, there is a variety of options in wardrobe shutters, one of which can save on significant space. While planning your own home design, consider the space where the wardrobe will be placed, and then decide the shutters accordingly. While hinged shutters are the most conventional, sliding shutters are major space savers which can allow a wardrobe to fit even into a narrow passageway or smaller bedroom. The sliding shutters allow for more movement within the small space without having anything extra get in the way.
    3. Kitchen Work Triangle: Another factor mentioned in a previous blog was the Kitchen Work Triangle. In the design phase, planning a kitchen design around the work triangle is a major lifesaver. Whether the kitchen has one cook or multiple cooks, it is essential that the kitchen space is planned for easy work flow and maximum efficiency. The work triangle should designate the three most important tasks within the kitchen: cooking, cleaning, and storage. In other words, the location of the hob and chimney, location of the sink and dishwasher, and location of the refrigerator. Ensure that the kitchen layout allows for an easily function work triangle for a smooth-running kitchen space.
    4. Mindful Vertical Storage: One of the more space-efficient tactics in smaller homes is the use of vertical storage. While it is a great space-saving solution, in designing a home one has to be mindful of its practicality. Especially in modular units, the storage should stay below 7 feet in height, otherwise it is extremely uncomfortable to reach and the storage space goes unused for everyday use.

Designing your home should reflect you, your lifestyle, and your preferences. In this taxing design process, the basic principles are can get forgotten. As you begin your home design, remember the fundamentals to have a smooth design!

  • Sizing up the Kitchen Backsplash

As mentioned in countless previous blogs, the kitchen backsplash can bring the entire appearance and look together. However, defining where the backsplash should be and where it should stop can get confusing. Most interior designers say that the backsplash should never stop! The material is so beautiful that it should be showcased as much as possible! However, that is not always possible depending on the construction and size. Nevertheless, there are ways around it to make the kitchen backsplash a striking feature within the kitchen. Below are the general rules of adding a backsplash to the kitchen, along with some thoughts and placing a backsplash based on kitchen size.

    General Rules

    1. Tile the Main Walls of the Kitchen: Ideally a kitchen backsplash should be along the main walls in the kitchen from corner to corner. That can include a single main wall or all main walls. If there are all main walls, then the backsplash can continue along the sides of the kitchen to create that illusion. However, if one main wall is to be used more than the other walls in the kitchen, then the that wall would get the kitchen backsplash rather than the other walls.
Image Credit: Homestratosphere Image Credit: Homestratosphere
    2. End the Backsplash in the Same Line as the Cabinetry: One of the main underlying questions is where the backsplash should end. Horizontally, it is best to end it in the same line as the upper and lower cabinets to create one crisp line. From a design perspective, this appears extremely neat and visually pleasing. However, if there is a higher ceiling in the kitchen, then it can get confusing on where the backsplash should stop. Depending on the size of the kitchen, where the backsplash should end may vary.

Smaller Kitchens: A fully covered wall is the best for a small kitchen. In a more compact layout, a single backsplash gives a tidy finish and makes the kitchen space look bigger. Having an ongoing backsplash from the fridge to the cabinetry creates a more complete look. A single backsplash along the kitchen wall can even bee a brighter color to give a small kitchen space a more expansive illusion.

Larger Kitchens: Backsplashes in large kitchens are dependent on the general space. If the kitchen has high ceilings, rather than taking tiles to full height, one can end the tile in the same line as the upper cabinets. In fact, larger kitchens can support darker colors to make the larger kitchen appear more cozy and intimate.

Sizing up the backsplash is dependent on the kitchen style and design. A backsplash brings the kitchen look together and creates a more complete design within the home.
